Background of the Study

Waste disposal workers play a crucial role in maintaining environmental cleanliness and public health. However, their occupation exposes them to various health risks, including respiratory diseases, skin infections, gastrointestinal disorders, and injuries from hazardous waste materials. Direct contact with contaminated waste, exposure to toxic chemicals, and inhalation of harmful fumes significantly increase their vulnerability to occupational illnesses (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2023).

In Yobe State, waste disposal workers operate under challenging conditions, often lacking adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper waste management facilities. The presence of biomedical waste, sharp objects, and chemical pollutants further exacerbates their health risks. Despite the essential services they provide, these workers often face poor working conditions and limited access to healthcare (Bello & Musa, 2024).

This study aims to evaluate the health risks associated with waste disposal work in Yobe State, identify major occupational hazards, and propose strategies for improving workplace safety and health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Occupational health and safety concerns among waste disposal workers remain a significant issue in Nigeria, particularly in urban areas where waste management systems are inadequate. Waste disposal workers in Yobe State are frequently exposed to hazardous materials without proper protective measures, increasing their risk of infectious diseases, respiratory problems, and workplace injuries (Usman & Ibrahim, 2023).

Despite growing awareness of occupational health risks, there is limited research on the specific challenges faced by waste disposal workers in Yobe State. This study seeks to bridge this gap by assessing their health risks, identifying common workplace hazards, and recommending strategies for improving their safety and well-being.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the health risks associated with waste disposal work in Yobe State.

2. To identify major occupational hazards faced by waste disposal workers.

3. To recommend safety measures for reducing health risks among waste disposal workers.

Research Questions

1. What are the common health risks experienced by waste disposal workers in Yobe State?

2. What occupational hazards contribute to health issues among waste disposal workers?

3. What measures can be implemented to improve the safety and health of waste disposal workers?

Research Hypotheses

1. Waste disposal workers in Yobe State face significant health risks due to exposure to hazardous materials.

2. The absence of proper protective equipment increases occupational health issues among waste disposal workers.

3. Implementing workplace safety measures can reduce health risks among waste disposal workers.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on waste disposal workers in Yobe State, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining health records and variations in individual health conditions.

Definitions of Terms

• Occupational Health Risks: Health problems resulting from workplace exposure to hazardous conditions.

• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Safety gear such as gloves, masks, and protective clothing used to minimize exposure to harmful substances.

• Hazardous Waste: Waste materials that pose a risk to human health and the environment.

• Respiratory Diseases: Lung conditions caused by inhaling harmful substances in the workplace.
